Orange Deciduous Leaf Hanging By Web String

Creekside Reserve, Beavercreek, Ohio

"The wilderness holds answers to questions man has not yet learned to ask." - Nancy Newhall

Walking along the morning dew-laden trail. This single fallen leaf was suspended midair. I've seen leaves hanging from webs and strings many times before, and it is almost impossible to photograph them! The lighting is always to shallow and dull, without needing an external flash. Another consideration is the wind, as the slightest breeze will sway these leaves around. Fortunately everything aligned so perfectly for this moment. The orange leaf was backlit by some heavenly light and with zero wind gusts. A very wide aperture of f/5.6 helped put the entire leaf in sharp focus while dropping out the entire background. The mustard color of the bokeh adds some nice tones to the entire color palette.

This is not digital art. The only touch I removed from the original look was cloning out the web string itself from the top center. While some may cry that as "not natural," the image simply looked better without that distraction. This is why I enjoy getting out there, you never know what you'll end up seeing.
