Skunk Cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus)

Sibenthaler Fen, Beavercreek, Ohio

Often one of the first perennial plants to bloom every spring. Skunk Cabbage has a unique chemistry that allows it to bloom while generating heat of up to 70 degrees, even melting nearby snow to escape to the surface. Bruised leaves may remind some of a skunk fragrance.
