Red Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)
Grant Park, Centerville, Ohio
"Hiking, adventure, the great outdoors, these are my reasons to move."
A common bird to hear in any wooded areas, they often flit to and from trees searching for insects. Naturally when a bird comes into plain view is when I decide to act on it with the camera. This woodpecker was very high up above me, but the morning light made it work out.
Two things stand out to me about this image; the blue sky and the camoflauge. The blue sky helps add a punch of contrast that any grey sky wouldn't work with. It's this contrast that helps distance the grey of the tree and the bird. Now, the woodpecker's feathers really display how well hidden it can be on a tree, except for the patch of red along the crest that the males employ.
