Woolly Bear Caterpillar (Pyrrharctia isabella)

"Slow down, think small. You will find them."
A humid morning out in my local patch of the woods had me finding a variety of subjects. Leaves and insects being the primary focus, I attempted some macro shots on this Woolly Bear Caterpillar. Not too satisfied with the results, I switched to a wide angle. Some may think this is a strange lens choice, but I found it more fitting to show the habitat this caterpillar was living in. A macro shot would leave out important elements like the leaf it was sitting on. Something about this angle makes for a more natural setting.
Woolly Bears are a hairy type of caterpillar that will curl up if disturbed or touched. They belong to a large subfamily of moths such as tiger, lichen and wasp moths. I tend to see these caterpillars the most in the mornings. Legend has it that these little bugs can predict winter weather (much like the groundhog) based on how wide their rusty middlesections are. The more rusty color, the more mild winter will be. The more black, the more sever winter. Slow down, think small and you will find them.
