Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura)
Beavercreek, Ohio
"A dove will never nest in a burning tree, nor will love ever reside in unforgiving heart." - Jason Versey
Soft evening light illuminates the beauty of these seemingly bland colored birds. I enjoy watching them make their way through the cut grass. In case you wondered why doves and other certain birds bob their heads as they walk. It is to provide visual acuity and accuracy; they can see much more of their surroundings than if they didn't.
These are some of my favorite backyard birds due to their docile nature. The mournful cooing is quite calming unlike a jay or crow. These doves however are terrible nest builders. Some may put together a handful of sticks on a tall tree and call it a nest, only to have get knocked down in the breeze.
