Five Lined Skink (Plestiodon fasciatus)
Cedar Bog Nature Preserve, Urbana, Ohio
"By discovering nature, you discover yourself." - Maxime Lagacé
A welcome surprise towards the end of my first day trip to Cedar Bog. This moderately large lizard hopped onto the boardwalk for a brief moment, long enough for me to grab a shot before it jumped down into the alkaline fen waters below. The one pictured here is an adult male with drastically different colors than what occur as it ages.
Typically the colors found on them are black with yellow stripes flowing down their entire body length ways and an iridescent blue tail. This means the subject here is quite a bit older in age. While I technically shot this image in a macro style, the look is hard to believe. However it definitely brings this beautiful lizard closer in the frame than a typically 35mm uncropped shot would do. This is a perfect reminder to search out the salamanders and other various critters in the Buckeye state!
