Silver-Spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus)
John Bryan State Park, Yellow Springs, Ohio
“Life is short. If you doubt me, ask a butterfly. Their average life span is a mere five to fourteen days.” - Ellen DeGeneres
Are they moths or butterflies or something else Skippers are a unique breed of butterfly that can be indentified by their pointed hooks on the ends of their antenna. Most moths fly by night, while butterflies and skippers fly during the day. The wings are not joined like moths are. Overall they are still as amazing to learn about as anything else.
I was very fortunate to get this macro shot detailing the eye in pin-sharp focus. The 1:1 magnification allowed all the closer details to come to life. The late afternoon lighting provided enough exposure without blowing out any highlights in the white flowers. Keeping in line with the rule of thirds, the skipper is slightly off-center to provided visual interest.
