Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata)
Woodman Fen, Dayton, Ohio
"If we don't plant the right things, we will reap the wrong things. It goes without saying. And you don't have to be, you know, a brilliant biochemist and you don't have to have an IQ of 150. Just common sense tells you to be kind, ninny, fool. Be kind." - Maya Angelou
This photo was rather documentative for me. What on the surface may seem like a visual illustration of a pretty flower is actually an invasive plant species. Garlic mustard typically invades shaded sections of wet woods, as was the case with this fen habitat.
Because of this, I have a love/hate feel for the image. My purpose as a photographer is to document the things around me as they naturally are. My purpose as an artist is to make a stunning photograph. I love this image from a technical standpoint; the lighting, macro perspective and more. However, it means so much more in an overall conservation minded view of our environment.
