Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota)
Huffman Metropark, Dayton, Ohio
"What I am interested in with birds, just as I am with spiders or monkeys, is what they do and why they do it." - David Attenborough
This small swallow sits in its small nest. Probably one of the more interesting bird photos I've taken, whether nesting or not. Cliff Swallows collect fragments and bits of dirt, mud and clay material to form these upright nests. The mud solidifies to keep them together on the ceilings of buildings or in this case, a dam.
At some dams like this one are where you may see a bevy of these nests lining the entire underside of the structure during spring time. This one happened to be very close to the edge of the rails as I saw one swallow fly to and from its home. I am simply amazed at this engineering marvel and what this little bird is capable of!
