Deadfallen Tree
Glen Helen Nature Preserve, Yellow Springs, Ohio
"Think outside, no box required."
This would be something of an image I thought about making somewhere for a while. A wide angle lens made quick work of this beautiful woodland scene. A vertical composition made much more sense to display the tree. Don't be afraid to experiment with vertical images, as the majority of photographers stick to 16:9 size. The leading line of a fallen tree helps guide your eye into the photo from front to back.
It can be a struggle to make a summer green foliage landscape look appealing. Many photos appear as green "messes" with no defined subject. In this case I thought the tree was contrasted just enough to bring it out of the greens. To assist with exposure, I bracketed 2-3 times to bring some light and highlight detail back into the shadowed forest. It is a wonder to see these all grown up organisms make their way to the ground.
