Mums (Chrysanthemum)

"When you look at a beautiful flower, see not only the beauty of the flower but also the reflection of the beauty of your life.” - Debasish Mridha
This image was created a few days after a very troubling event in my life. The situation was bad enough that I questioned everything I enjoyed and part of me wanted to throw in the towel and give up on photography. For the next day off I had, the rain never let up the whole morning yet I knew I had to get out there unless I'd be sitting around at home. Weather shouldn't have to stop a nature photographer, and I wasn't really in the mood to hike many countless and wet miles either.
I sought to visit a nearby botanical garden. A very nice and easy stroll through the gardens alone helped figure myself out. I dodged the on-off rain showers by hiding under a gazebo centrally located in the garden. This is one of a handful of images I really like from that trip. At the risk of sounding dramatic, it steered me away from thinking of quitting altogether. To say the least, I haven't looked back since. And in a way writing these descriptions out is like therapy; a blank space to get buried thoughts out of my head.
The overcast lighting really made this shot a keeper. The high contrast of the pinks against the green surrounding leaves and plants helps add that "pop" of color that flower photos need so much of. I enjoy the use of perspective in the image, the closer mum is "staring" at the camera while the farther second one is "looking" away. The world works in wonderful and strange ways that we cannot explain.
