Red Admiral Butterfly (Vanessa atalanta)
James Ranch Garden, Xenia, Ohio
"I almost wish we were butterflies and liv'd but three summer days - three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain." - John Keats
A different take on a common butterfly. While most images tend to show from above their wings pointed down, I also look to photograph them from the side. The intricate and beautiful wing colors and patterns of butterflies and moths is something to look for. However I want experiment and break the mold a bit.
A gentle pop of flash acted as a "fill light" to soften the hard light from the late morning. As always, this also livens the shadow details just a bit. A wider aperture drops the background out of focus, yet I deliberately included some more coneflowers to complete the look. Rule of thirds then offsets the subject to the left while looking towards the right.
